Nature	Aberration of curse and the Far Realm
Reputed origin	A last work of the Order of the Watchers

No one truly knows where the beholders first came from. But at the edges of civilisation it is said that they were a last attempt by the Order of the Watchers to force order upon their subjects - an attempt that instead worked a terrible curse, binding those same Watchers to energies drawn from the Far Realm, and so giving rise to the beholders.
