The Protodragons Theory
The Protodragons Theory, advanced by the archaeologist Corian Ballard, holds that there once existed ancient, reptilian creatures that resembled dragons in certain key respects but were far smaller and more varied - some even wholly vegetarian. By the theory’s reckoning these animals were neither magical nor especially intelligent, and seem to have died out hundreds of thousands of years ago, or longer.
