Death of Mauran

Summary

On the 9th day of the 9th month, 641 AC, Magna Um Fearheart, the first lich, slew Mauran Magefather, the father of wizardry.

Context

Mauran had restored learned arcane magic to the world and founded the tradition from which later wizards descended. Fearheart embodied its darkest corruption: a mage who had conquered death through lichdom.

Event

Fearheart killed Mauran, answering the Magefather’s celebrated magic with his own necromantic power. The first lich remained undefeated after the murder.

Significance

Mauran’s death closed the founding generation of post-Collapse wizardry and deprived the growing magical tradition of its greatest teacher.

Consequences

For nine years Fearheart remained a threat to the magical world. He was finally overcome on the same calendar date in 650 AC, an interval later remembered through the Ninth Magical Year.

Legacy

Mauran is remembered as a martyr to learned magic, while Fearheart is remembered as the first lich and the Magefather’s killer.
