Defeat of Fearheart
Summary
On the 9th day of the 9th month, 650 AC, exactly nine years after the death of Mauran Magefather, Magna Um Fearheart was defeated by the nine archmages of the schools of magic.
Context
Fearheart had remained undefeated since murdering Mauran on the same date in 641 AC. The first lich stood as both a mortal danger and a living desecration of the magical tradition the Magefather had restored.
Event
The nine archmages confronted and defeated Fearheart. Accepted histories preserve the victory but not the place or methods by which the first lich was overcome. They do not establish that he was completely destroyed.
Significance
The victory ended the nine-year period that began with Mauran’s death. Its date, its nine victors, and the nine years of struggle gave the number nine lasting significance among wizardly institutions.
Consequences
The victory became the foundation of the Ninth Magical Year, a recurring year of magical celebration and contemplation. Fearheart was never known to have returned, but neither was his final destruction proven.
Legacy
Fearheart’s defeat is remembered as proof that learned magic could survive the death of its founder and overcome the corruption represented by the first lich. Many nevertheless believe that the god of liches found some means to persist beyond his defeat, as liches are defined by surviving what should have destroyed them.
