Material Rules

The properties below describe how an item changes when the listed material replaces its ordinary construction. Unless an entry says otherwise, 0 means the material does not alter that property, N/A means the property cannot apply, and Varies means the material has no single reliable value. Material properties do not stack with themselves, and a composite item uses only the material that forms the bulk of its structure, unless otherwise stated.

These properties govern what a finished item does when it is used or worn. They do not describe how difficult the item itself is to damage; use Object Durability for that. In particular, Protection is the AC granted to a creature wearing armor made from the material, while Object AC is the AC used when the item itself is attacked.

Move one column for each point of Damage. Parenthetical dice are equivalent alternatives used when an effect specifically changes the number rather than the size of a weapon’s damage dice.

Object Durability

Use these rules only when an attack or effect can damage an object. Damage dealt to a creature does not also damage its worn or carried equipment unless the effect or a material rule explicitly says otherwise. Likewise, an item’s Damage, Protection, Critical, Penetration, and Magic Capacity do not change its Object AC or Hit Points.

Object AC. Object AC measures how difficult it is to deal meaningful damage to an object, not how well it can dodge. Use the material forming most of the object’s structure. The standard values are taken from the baseline object rules; the additional values extend that scale to materials used in Thelemar.

For a material not listed, use the closest ordinary analogue. Quicksilver has no Object AC while it is a free liquid; attack its container instead. A composite object normally uses the Object AC of the material forming the part being attacked.

Object Hit Points. Choose fragile or resilient from the finished object’s construction and condition, not solely from its material. A thin pane, hollow ornament, or damaged tool is usually fragile. A weapon, shield, suit of armor, or sturdy tool intended to withstand impacts is usually resilient.

At 0 Hit Points, an object loses its structural integrity and is broken or destroyed as appropriate. For a Huge or Gargantuan object, track Large or smaller sections separately or assign a Damage Threshold: damage from one attack or effect below the threshold is superficial and reduces no Hit Points.

Damage Types. Objects are immune to Poison and Psychic damage. The DM can also rule that a damage type or tool is ineffective or especially effective against a particular object; a sword cannot reasonably cut through a stone wall, while a pick can chip it. Entry-specific rules that chip, shatter, dissolve, repair, or otherwise alter an item affect the object itself and apply even when no one separately attacks it.

Magical Interference

Whenever an overloaded item’s magical property is activated or it is used to make an attack, saving throw, or ability check, roll a d20. If the result is lower than the number of effects above its Magic Capacity, roll on the Magical Interference table. Passive effects are checked when the item is first put on or otherwise brought into use, and again after each Short or Long Rest while it remains overloaded.

1Arcane Sparks. The item sheds dim, colorful light in a 10-foot radius and hums loudly. Its user has Disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks while it is unsheathed or worn.
2Feedback Jolt. When the user rolls a 1 on an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check involving the item, they take 1d4 Force damage per magical effect on it.
3Fickle Magic. After each Short or Long Rest, determine one of the item’s magical effects at random. That effect is suppressed until the next rest.
4Wild Surge. The first time the user rolls a 20 on an attack roll or ability check involving the item, they immediately roll on the Wild Magic Surge table.
5Repulsion. When the user takes more than 15 damage from one source, the item flies 10 feet away in a random direction if it can be removed or dropped.
6Overheat. Activating any of the item’s magical properties deals 1d6 Fire damage to the user.
7Leyline Shift. When the user scores a critical hit with the item, or a creature scores a critical hit against the user while the item is worn, the user teleports 15 feet in a random direction to the nearest unoccupied space.
8Arcane Detonation. The item’s lowest-tier magical effect permanently burns out. Each creature within 10 feet must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 3d6 Force damage on a failed save or half as much on a successful one.

Some creatures, including many werewolves, can be harmed normally by silvered weapons even when ordinary weapons fail. A properly silvered weapon bypasses Resistance or Immunity to mundane weapons only when the creature’s rules specifically say that silver does so.

Electrum

Electrum is a naturally occurring or deliberately made alloy of gold and silver. It is valued for enchantments concerned with exchange, duality, and transformation. Two opposed states of one magical property, such as revealing and concealing or heating and cooling, count as one effect against an electrum item’s Magic Capacity when only one state can function at a time.

Quicksilver is a toxic liquid metal used in alchemy, sealed mechanisms, and amalgams. It cannot form equipment by itself. A creature exposed to an open vial or ruptured channel must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 2d6 Poison damage and have the Poisoned condition for 1 hour.

Darkmetal

  • A darkmetal shield grants 1 more AC than an ordinary shield of its type.
  • A darkmetal weapon gains the Heavy property and loses the Light and Finesse properties.

Orichalcum

Desert Ironwood

A tree with a thin trunk and many narrow branches, desert ironwood is both dense and strong. Because they only flower and fruit four years per decade, desert ironwood is scarce, but where one tree is found, there are others nearby. These trees, which thrive anywhere from lush oases to barren deserts, provide the ecosystem with shade and food, granting all manner of desert creatures refuge within the canopies. Because desert ironwood twists and knots as it grows, finding a tree with a suitable piece of wood is a challenge, and only advanced masterwork artisans can work with this dense, unyielding wood. Desert ironwood is dark, with reddish hues and violet striations throughout. Its density makes it durable, though quite heavy; items made of it are 25 percent heavier than their mundane counterparts.

  • A ranged weapon made from desert ironwood has an increased normal range equal to half of its current normal range. For instance, a shortbow made of desert iron wood has a normal range of 120 feet and a long range of 480 feet.
  • Weapon attacks made with a melee weapon made of desert ironwood score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.

Stout Blackwood

Characterized by their ability to survive in the harshest weather, stout blackwood trees are found in remote locations throughout mountainous regions. Stout blackwoods have thinner trunks, heavily ringed with the passing of short, rough growing seasons. They tend to grow in abundance in valleys where snow and rain collect or near glacier-fed rivers. Their leaves are tiny and needle-like, staying on year-round to gather whatever bits of sunlight filter through the cloudy, snowy days. In the first weeks of warmer weather, stout blackwoods flower and fruit, attracting creatures emerging from hibernation. While the bark of stout blackwood trees is white, the wood inside is a rich black. These trees produce stiff, sturdy wood that creates extreme tension in ranged weapons; stout blackwood shortbows and longbows are hard to use, but crossbows made of it are granted heightened accuracy and impact. This wood also absorbs the force of impact, which makes it particularly useful in crafting melee weapons. Stout blackwood is a superb material for masterwork artisans ranging in skill from beginner to advanced.

  • When you score a critical hit using a ranged weapon made from stout blackwood that has the loading property, you deal an extra 1d4 damage of the weapon’s type.
  • Once per turn when you hit a creature using a two-handed melee weapon made from stout blackwood, you can make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). If you succeed, you either knock the target prone or push them 5 feet away from you (your choice).

Yellowwood

Found in tropical environments, yellowwood trees grow on hillsides and along rivers and streams. The trees grow tall, reaching above the canopy for light. Due to year-round sun and a wet climate, there are very few rings in the trunks of yellowwood trees. The bark of these trees is dark brown and can be peeled back easily, revealing much lighter wood underneath. The wood of a yellowwood tree is flexible and lightweight. It can be challenging to work with, as it tends to overextend when shaped. Due to yellowwood’s density, items made of it are 50 percent lighter than their mundane counterparts.

  • While you’re wielding a yellowwood longbow or shortbow, being within 5 feet of a hostile creature doesn’t impose disadvantage on your ranged attack rolls.
  • When you take the Attack action and attack with a melee weapon made of yellowwood, you can use a bonus action to make an additional attack with that weapon. You don’t add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative.

Goldleaf Wood

Ordinary Glass

A rare crystal found in the Black Desert and, unbeknownst to most scholars, within the Starlight Roads, Jadoo is coveted as a raw form of magic. It can host any number of unrelated magical effects without interference and was used in modern attempts to reproduce Maathaum and Sumaathaum. Bare contact creates a moment of sensory overload: Jadoo is described as tasting of every taste, smelling of every scent, and sounding like all melodies at once. A creature touching an unshielded piece for the first time must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be Incapacitated until the start of its next turn.

Crystallized Elemental Energy

Where an elemental plane presses against another plane or bleeds into the Prime Material, raw energy can condense into apparently solid matter. Such condensates are neither ordinary minerals nor dead elemental creatures. Each carries an affinity, which determines what it does well, and an instability, which describes how its planar nature escapes control.

An elemental condensate can replace a weapon’s striking surface, an armor’s primary protective layer, or a spellcasting focus. Its special property applies only in that role. Unless an entry states otherwise, an activated property is regained after a Long Rest.

Emberglass (Fire)

Affinity. Emberglass is warm even in winter and kindles dry material touched to it for a minute. A weapon made from it can deal Fire damage instead of its normal type.

Instability. Cold damage or immersion in water suppresses its affinity until the end of the user’s next turn.

Skyshard (Air)

Affinity. Equipment made primarily from Skyshard weighs one quarter as much, and a Skyshard weapon’s normal and long thrown ranges increase by 20 feet.

Instability. When it takes Thunder damage, a creature holding or wearing it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet.

Tideglass (Water)

Affinity. When an attack hits its wearer, the wearer can take a Reaction to move 5 feet without provoking Opportunity Attacks.

Instability. Cold damage suppresses this movement until the end of the wearer’s next turn.

Rootstone (Earth)

Affinity. While its user stands on earth or stone, they have Advantage on checks and saving throws made to resist being shoved or knocked Prone.

Instability. Armor made from Rootstone reduces its wearer’s Speed by 5 feet.

Magmaheart (Magma)

Affinity. After a Magmaheart weapon hits a creature wearing manufactured armor, the next attack against that creature before the start of the user’s next turn gains a +1 bonus.

Instability. Cold damage makes it contract explosively, dealing 1d6 Force damage to the creature carrying it.

Smokestone (Smoke)

Affinity. As a Bonus Action, its user can create a 10-foot-radius Sphere of smoke that is Heavily Obscured for 1 minute or until dispersed by a strong wind.

Instability. Creatures relying on smell have Advantage on checks made to locate its carrier.

Rimeglass (Ice)

Affinity. A creature critically hit by a Rimeglass weapon has its Speed reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn.

Instability. Fire damage reduces its Protection and Critical to 0 until it is repaired during a Short Rest with smith’s or glassblower’s tools.

Vitriol Crystal (Ooze)

Affinity. Vitriol Crystal repairs its own mundane damage during a Long Rest. A weapon made from it can deal Acid damage instead of its normal type.

Instability. On a natural 1 attack roll, its user takes 1d4 Acid damage.

Mineralite (Positive Earth)

Affinity. Once per day, touching Mineralite to a damaged nonmagical object for 1 minute repairs a break or tear no larger than 1 foot in any dimension.

Instability. Magical interference doubles the item’s weight until one of its magical effects is removed.

Stormprism (Positive Air)

Affinity. Its user gains a +1 bonus to Initiative and can take a Reaction immediately after being hit to move up to 10 feet without provoking Opportunity Attacks.

Instability. On a natural 1 involving the item, its user takes 1d6 Lightning damage.

Cloudpearl (Positive Water)

Affinity. A creature that spends Hit Dice during a Short Rest while holding Cloudpearl regains additional Hit Points equal to its Proficiency Bonus.

Instability. Cold damage suppresses this benefit until the pearl spends 1 minute in a fire or another source of strong heat.

Sunprism (Positive Fire)

Affinity. Sunprism sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for a further 20 feet on command. As a Magic action, its user can outline Invisible creatures and objects in the bright light until the start of the user’s next turn.

Instability. Magical Darkness of spell level 3 or higher suppresses it while their areas overlap.

Duststone (Negative Earth)

Affinity. A Duststone weapon deals double damage to nonmagical objects and structures.

Instability. On a natural 1 attack roll, its Damage decreases by 1 until rebuilt during a Short Rest with mason’s tools.

Voidglass (Negative Air)

Affinity. On command, a Voidglass item produces no sound and grants Advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks that depend on moving quietly.

Instability. While this property is active, its user cannot speak or provide Verbal spell components.

Gravesalt (Negative Water)

Affinity. An intact Gravesalt container preserves nonliving organic material indefinitely. A creature hit by a Gravesalt weapon cannot regain Hit Points until the start of the user’s next turn.

Instability. Fresh water dissolves exposed Gravesalt in 1 minute.

Ashglass (Negative Fire)

Affinity. Ashglass can extinguish a nonmagical flame no larger than a 5-foot Cube by touch. When its user takes Fire damage, they can take a Reaction to gain Resistance to that instance of damage; the glass then becomes inert until the next Long Rest.

Instability. Water suppresses its affinity for 1 hour.

Lifeglass (Positive Energy)

Affinity. When a spell cast through Lifeglass restores Hit Points, one healing die that rolled a 1 or 2 can be rerolled.

Instability. If the target is already at its Hit Point maximum, it instead takes Radiant damage equal to the spell’s level.

Deathglass (Negative Energy)

Affinity. When a living creature dies within 10 feet, Deathglass can hold one death charge for 24 hours. A weapon or focus made from it can expend that charge to deal an extra 2d6 Necrotic damage to one target damaged by it.

Instability. If the charge expires, its bearer takes 2d6 Necrotic damage.

Ioun Crystal

Ioun Crystal is a natural conduit to the Positive Energy Plane. It forms inside geodes near the boundary of the Quasi-Elemental Plane of Mineral. Whole crystals are called Ioun Stones; broken pieces are Ioun fragments; the crystalline web around them is Ioun Sand.

Ioun Stones

Each intact Ioun Stone has one specific magical property, indicated by its color and shape.

Bond. A stone bonds with a creature after remaining in contact with it or within 1 foot of it for 7 consecutive days.

Orbit. A bonded creature can use a Magic action to place the stone in orbit within 3 feet, activating its property. An orbiting stone is a Tiny worn object with AC 24, 10 Hit Points, and Resistance to all damage. Its property is inactive while it is not orbiting.

Ioun Fragments

A fragment retains the resonance of the stone from which it broke but not that stone’s complete property. It can serve as a spellcasting focus for one effect aligned with that resonance; the aligned effect does not count against the fragment’s Magic Capacity. Unlike Jadoo, it cannot hold unrelated magic without limit.

Ioun Geodes

An intact Ioun geode is an unattractive shell about 1 foot across, though some grow much larger. It contains 3d4 Ioun Stones suspended in a crystalline web and surrounded by Ioun Sand. Breaking it releases centuries of trapped Positive Energy. A master jeweler and spellcaster can shape it into a matrix such as a helm, bracer, staff, halo, pendant, or torc. An actual Ioun Stone placed in the matrix remains until deliberately removed, and each coherent numerical property granted by that stone is doubled, including bonuses, ranges, areas, damage, healing, capacities, and durations. The DM adjudicates properties that cannot coherently be doubled.

Ioun Sand does not double ordinary enchantments, Dragon Blood uses, or the effects of loose Ioun fragments. Complete matrices holding several intact stones are among the rarest magical devices in existence.

Dragon Blood

Dragon’s blood is a spellcraft reagent rather than a structural material. Blood taken straight from a dragon is powerful but narrow: it strengthens a spell associated with the dragon’s own element, breath, or domain, and nothing more. Raw blood spoils rapidly unless preserved. Distillation does not make it stronger; it makes it broader.

The Twelve Uses of Dragon’s Blood

Every hedge-alchemist in Thelemar can tell you that dragon’s blood is potent. Only a Bana Drakar alchemist can tell you how, and even they argue about it. What they agree on is the count: there are twelve uses.

Distilling. Distilling one vial takes 8 hours of uninterrupted work, alchemist’s supplies, and a successful check using those supplies against the DC used to harvest the blood. A failed check ruins the vial, with no partial result. Distilled blood keeps indefinitely.

Invoking a Use. Distilled dragon’s blood is a variant spell component. When a spell is cast using a vial, its caster chooses a number of distinct uses up to the blood’s potency. The vial is consumed whether the spell succeeds or fails.

  10. Tenacious. The spell does not require Concentration.
  11. Reliable. Treat any damage die that rolls a 1 or a 2 as a 3.
  12. Sanguine. The spell cannot be counterspelled or dispelled.

The same use cannot be invoked twice on one casting, and two vials cannot be combined: blood curdles against blood. Using more than one monstrous component on a casting still risks a Wild Magic Surge as normal. No alchemist has drawn more than four uses from a single vial. Several have tried; the Bana Drakar keeps their names on a plaque.

Dragon Heart

A dragon’s heart often continues beating after death. Properly housed, it can power a magical construct indefinitely or replace material components worth up to 10,000 gp in a resurrection spell, after which it stops. Fear Dragon hearts beat in erratic, disturbing rhythms and can power effects based on coercion, destruction, or fear. Safety Dragon hearts maintain perfect, soothing patterns and can power wards, healing, or protective constructs. A heart is a unique organ, never a bulk commodity.

Draconic Domain Resonance

A finished object made from solid dragon remains may carry one resonance from the source dragon’s domain in addition to the universal property of the body part. Resonances do not stack with themselves, and Dragon Blood uses its separate rules above. Unless an entry says otherwise, an activated resonance is regained after a Long Rest.

Constructed Materials

An alloy has its own fixed property block and special rules. It does not inherit every statistic or ability of its ingredients, and adding a trace of an exotic metal to an existing item never grants that alloy’s properties without completely reforging it according to the proper recipe.

Mirror Amalgam is a sealed silver-and-quicksilver coating applied to glass, crystal, or polished obsidian. It can serve as a focus for Divination and Illusion spells. Once per Long Rest when such a spell is cast through it, the caster can double either the spell’s range or its duration. Fire damage that reaches the coating destroys it. A mirror used repeatedly to contact spirits can also become contaminated, replaying images supplied by the spirit rather than true reflections.

One of the Empire’s earliest and most defining inventions, Heart Stone is believed to have been a leading cause of its rise to dominance, and the craft of making it was lost in The Collapse - no new Heart Stone has been worked since. It is untouched by time and the strife of the world, which is why its greatest works still stand: above all the Flard, the oracle pillars, alongside other Imperial relics such as the Starlight Roads and the towering Great Statues.
