Flard
Flard
Also known as The oracle pillars Type Imperial artifact (oracular construct) Material [[Materials#Heart Stone Created by The Arcane Architects (theorized) Era The Empire, before The Collapse Power Answers one question per awakening (~once in 500 years)
Flard are enormous pillars of HeartStone - forty to a hundred meters tall and five to thirty across - that survived the fall of the Empire. Smooth, cold, and untouched by time, each is a near-omniscient oracle: spoken its true name (its “password”), a flard awakens and answers a single question before falling dormant for centuries.
How They Work
A flard’s magical signature weaves divination, transmutation, and abjuration - divination dominant - at a strength beyond modern measure. It will answer almost any question with perfect accuracy, drawing on knowledge no living mind could hold (one was famously asked the menus of the last Emperor and recited them flawlessly). But it may be awakened only once every several hundred years - roughly every 500 - and even the correct name will not rouse a flard that has lately spoken. Curiously, a flard struggles to name other flard, so their true names survive only in scattered ancient texts, sought by so-called Name Hunters.
Origins
Scholars hold the flard to be works of the Empire: they are made of HeartStone (one of the Empire’s earliest and most defining inventions), share design with Imperial relics like the Starlight Roads, and would have demanded a colossal magical and architectural undertaking. The leading theory credits the Empire’s master mages, the Arcane Architects. Why they were built - to archive knowledge, to communicate, to preserve the Empire’s legacy - remains unknown.
Theories of Function
The Flardium Compendium catalogues many attempts to explain a flard’s power; none is proven:
- The Probabilistic Approach - a flard calculates reality from the laws of causality rather than recalling facts.
- The Fishnet Paradigm - the cosmos is a web on which every event leaves a vibration; the flard is a vast, cross-planar collector that reads them.
- The Oracle Proposition - at its last waking, a flard foresees its next question and spends centuries preparing that one answer.
- The World Archive Theorem - all knowledge persists in a metaphysical archive; flard are mere access points to it.
- The Old God Conjecture - a bound god of knowledge powers them (widely doubted).
- The Norn Idea - flard are attunement instruments that read the tapestry of fate as the Norns and Moirai do.
