August Shein grew up in a tribe of northern nomads, the son of a hunter. His people nearly failed to survive one brutal winter, and were saved only by their physical nearness to the Molten Tear, the school of Evocation. He joined that school and rose to become one of its finest students. During the great war against the House of Horrors, however, he nearly died fighting a mao at the famed Battle of Rumble Creek - and resolved afterward to learn how to defend himself, becoming one of the first true pioneers of war-magic.
Now sixty, tired and ill-tempered, August nonetheless wants nothing more than to serve his country, and has come as the Republic’s envoy to the contest for the Ring of Unshackled Desire.
