Contralegem - known to the underworld of Teremisis as “the Shadow” - is a masked vigilante who has made it his work to bring down the Night Market. “I simply pick up where the law trails off,” he says of himself, hooded and unseen. He cannot change his shape and cannot walk in by the front door, and so what would take him months of patient planning he is glad to let abler hands accomplish in days. Years of watching have convinced him that the market’s public mistress, “Clanmeister Elana Ducain,” is a mask for someone far higher up, and he has narrowed that hidden master to a short list of suspects among the city’s powerful.
