Sylliren Annabelle Zymaris
Sylliren Annabelle Zymaris
Sylliren Annabelle Zymaris is a Clairnian heiress, investigative journalist, and - of late - a warlock, born in 1469 to the powerful political dynasty of House Zymaris of Clairnia. To the public she is the poised granddaughter of the great Devdan Sylath; to her network of revolutionaries she is the anonymous author Saber Zeigler, “the Whip of Princes.”
Description
Physical Appearance
Tall, graceful, and statuesque, with light olive skin and bright, honeyed-amber eyes. As a Dendulra, red rose petals grow from her long, slightly-wavy black hair and break off - and now and then a full rose blooms; years of picking them off have thinned her hair somewhat. She nearly always wears black, accented in her signature mahogany red, wine purple, and ultramarine blue. Since her pact, her left forearm is stained ink-black to the elbow.
Personality
Intelligent, cultured, and highly sophisticated. Calm, collected, meticulous, and patient - until she feels cornered, at which point anything is fair game to keep matters under her control. She is unfailingly polite, often going out of her way to be courteous even to those she is about to harm or manipulate. In her last years she teeters between visionary brilliance and obsessive madness, sleeping and eating less as she grips ever tighter to her grand design.
Biography
Sylliren was born on the 6th of the First Month, 1469, into privilege and near-omnipotent adoration. When she was six, her parents died in a fire at a grand party - declared a terrorist attack by her grandfather, Devdan Sylath, a towering radical-conservative figure of Clairnian politics, who took her into his austere capital manor. He nurtured her thirst for knowledge while guiding it carefully toward his worldview, and set her writing for far-right publications as a teenager, where her gift for rhetoric quickly drew attention.
But the world beyond his manor raised questions. Sent to the La Rochelle docks to report on the success of a new law, she instead uncovered the systematic abuse and underpayment of its largely non-human workers, and the collusion that sustained it. Disillusioned, she wrote a secret counter-article under the pen name Saber Zeigler, and began quietly publishing for the underground press, challenging the very views she was paid to parrot.
At eighteen she met Aurel, son of a count, at a masquerade; over nine years he became her partner in love and in cause, feeding her insider information. Pursuing a PhD in History and Economics, she grew ever more radical and impatient. Her first assassination attempt came after a damning exposé; Aurel saved her life but, unable to bear the danger, ended their romance, though he kept passing her information. Then a chance discovery of her father’s diary led her to the devastating truth: her grandfather had secretly engineered the very edict whose backlash killed her parents. Her attempt to expose him publicly failed against a system rigged in his favour - so in 1497 she poisoned him into a conscious but paralysed, speechless catatonia.
In 1498 she published her most dangerous work, an exposé of a prince’s trade in and abuse of the Twisted Races, earning her alter ego the name “the Whip of Princes” and a second assassination attempt. That same year, at a grand ball, a mysterious and immensely powerful patron offered her not servitude but an alliance; after days of reflection she sealed the pact and became a warlock. She now works with her patron toward the wholesale reshaping of Clairnia into a rigid, authoritarian meritocracy - convinced that she alone must be the author of change.
Notable Works

- “Operation Miasma” - the crown’s deliberate spread of a magical disease (later identified as Lycanthropy) among targeted populations.
- “Clairnia’s Forces: Peacekeepers or Predators?” - Clairnian atrocities against Tabaxi and Loxodon communities, which drew her first assassination attempt.
- “Clairnia: A Twisted Menagerie” - the prince’s capture and exhibition of Twisted Races, her most dangerous work.
- Books on political economy under the Zeigler name, including Plowing Through, Guilded Age, Taxing Times, and Crown and Clown: The Absurdity of “Divine” Right.
