The Blood Offerings
The Blood Offerings (canna di sangue) were a wave of ritual mass killings that spread across the world around the year 900. Each followed the same dreadful pattern: a large number of victims slain, usually in an enclosed space, their bodies burned together with a rare incense called canna di sangue. The few survivors spoke of black-cowled figures who fought in astonishing ways and murmured mystic words of worship.
The cult was eventually traced to the monks of Kali’s temples, who performed the dark rite to strengthen their goddess and wake her from her slumber. According to Brosius’s study Viewing the Evidence - The Blood Offerings, the practice did not arise among the faithful on its own: it sprang from a deception by the terrible demon Maricha, the Great Deceiver - a conclusion the surviving historical sources tend to support.
The legendary hero Raven, raised in the northern monastery of Kali, was the spearhead of her monastery’s part in the Offerings before she turned against them; her victims are estimated, cautiously, in the hundreds. The practice waned after a wave of monk-hunts and the loss of two of its most powerful practitioners - but it was never wholly forgotten, and the monks who later recoiled from how deep the fiend-corruption ran would go on to found the Crimson Ravens.
