The Apostles of Opposition
In the oldest histories, when the Fiend Flood drowned the kingdoms of Loreshia, the nine rulers of Mictlān are said to have raised not only monsters but mortal cults - and at their head nine Apostles, each the chosen servant of one archfiend, charged with spreading the worship of Mictlān and labouring toward a second fiend flood.
Legend holds that the original nine were undone long ago - assassinated by Asandrea, who wore the Mask of Asandrea to reach them one by one. Whether the line of Apostles has ever risen again is a matter of rumour and dread; the Crimson Ravens, for their part, count the Apostles among their sworn enemies.
Legacy in History
Across surviving chronicles, the Apostles are presented less as a mere cult and more as a ninefold command structure: each apostle tied to one archfiend, with doctrine, recruitment, and operations distributed among those nine lines of patronage.
That model - one mortal hand for each fiend power in Mictlān - is the reason later fiendish conspiracies are so often described by historians as “apostolic” even when direct proof is missing.
Modern Rumours
In the present age, stories of the Apostles usually surface in three forms:
- whispers of an old, coordinated design behind otherwise separate fiend-cults,
- recurring claims that certain elite agents serve as “chosen” of the archfiends,
- and fears that the first Fiend Flood was not the end of the design, only an interruption.
Most such claims are impossible to verify. Even so, the order’s image remains potent enough that anti-fiend groups such as the Crimson Ravens still treat the Apostles as an active threat pattern, whether literal or symbolic.
In Popular Imagination
Ballads, pamphlets, and soldiers’ tales often conflate the Apostles with later fiend-corruption events, including episodes remembered from the era of the Blood Offerings. Scholars caution that many such links are speculative - but the association persists.
