The Mask Carnival is the famed annual festival of Patacon, the canal-city of southern Clairnia. For seven days at the peak of summer the city is dressed in colourful banners, intricate decorations, and enchanting lights that shimmer off the water of its canals.
Origins
The carnival traces back to a forbidden love affair between a noble scion of House Cartos and a charismatic street performer of the city’s markets. Divided by a vast social gulf, the two met in secret behind masks that hid their faces from prying eyes - and, longing to show their affection openly, devised a grand masquerade where nobles and commoners could mingle freely, every true identity concealed behind a disguise. The festivity became a tradition of the city, though none can say what finally became of the noble and the performer.
Themes and Atmosphere
The carnival embodies a spirit of rebellion and liberation - a celebration of love in the face of rigid society. Streets fill with acrobats, fire-breathers, and spellbinding illusionists; music from haunting to lively spills through the alleyways, and spontaneous parties erupt as pub-keepers and wine-merchants simply give from their stock and join the revelry.
Masks and Costumes
Masks here are no mere ornament but symbols of rebellion and solidarity, letting wearers shed their social rank and embrace a sense of equality. They range from opulent, gem-studded works to elegant disguises of humble make - and it is said that some masks sold in the streets carry magical properties that last only for the days of the carnival, deepening the event’s mystery.
