The Complex is a secret society operating out of Patacon, the floating city of Clairnia. Its members communicate in a private cant, and most of them are changelings - a fact that makes the society fiendishly hard to root out.

The Complex makes sinister use of Patacon’s famous masked carnival: amid the revelry and the universal wearing of masks, its agents abduct people for some ritual whose purpose remains unknown. The archaeologist Corian Ballard, in the city to study the carnival in 1534, stumbled upon one such kidnapping; using his command of languages to crack the Complex’s cant, and aided by a changeling rogue named Shin, he infiltrated a hideout and stopped a ritual - though the society’s members slipped away uncaught.
