The Ragnarok Draft
The Ragnarok Draft was the great mobilisation of the Lexalian Republic during the War of Horrors, when the war was proclaimed to be Ragnarok itself - the Twilight of the Gods, the final battle for the fate of the world. Under the Ragnarok Law the Republic called its people to arms en masse and moved the seat of its government to Coldheart the better to prosecute the war. Even those who had never wished to soldier, like the reformed cut-purse Bhergan Drowt, judged that with the end of the world at hand there was no other choice.
It was, in the end, a lie. The “final battle” was no Ragnarok but a hunt - the persecution of the Horrors, the different and the downtrodden, who wished only to be left alone. When the great effort came to nothing, the failure became the seed of the first true crisis of confidence in the Republic’s history.
