The Horrors are beings brought into the world by the terrible experiments of the Girl of the Volcano, whose birth set off the War of Horrors. Reviled and hunted across the land as monsters and abominations, they are in truth far more than that: they are sentient, capable of grief, fear, and the full range of feeling and morality - a fact that drove the four great powers, at last, to sign the Verra Accords and turn to face them together.
Much of what is known of their making was kept at the House of Horrors, where they were created and studied.
Some who fought them came to see the truth. Soldiers like Bhergan Drowt, who looked into their eyes and saw not only madness and rage but grief for fallen comrades, fear for their lives, and - in their own camps - laughter, dancing, and prayers for the war to end, understood that the war was no Ragnarok but a hunt of the different and the downtrodden, who had withdrawn to a remote island wishing only to be left alone.
