A Horror is a humanoid fused with a fiendish entity through dark ritual to create a living weapon. Ma’ar was the first Horror, created by the Holy Theocracy of Olympus as a desperate experiment to repel an invasion.
The Girl of the Volcano did not originate Horrors. Her creation in a later age set off the War of Horrors, and she became central to the creation of the modern Horrors associated with that conflict. Reviled and hunted across the land as monsters and abominations, Horrors are in truth far more than that: they are sentient, capable of grief, fear, and the full range of feeling and morality - a fact that drove the four great powers, at last, to sign the Verra Accords and turn to face them together.
Much of what is known of their making was kept at the House of Horrors, where they were created and studied.
Some who fought them came to see the truth. Soldiers like Bhergan Drowt, who looked into their eyes and saw not only madness and rage but grief for fallen comrades, fear for their lives, and - in their own camps - laughter, dancing, and prayers for the war to end, understood that the war was no Ragnarok but a hunt of the different and the downtrodden, who had withdrawn to a remote island wishing only to be left alone.
