Meltor Fon Umerits is the usurper king of Clairnia. The executed brother of Clairnia’s former king, he returned after twenty years in which all trace of him had vanished and murdered his brother and much of the royal family to seize the throne in 1538.
In truth, Meltor died before his return. Dulahan, acting with the aid of Orceus, found his soul and raised him as a Death Knight, promising to help him depose the king. Members of the Clairnian Royal Guard whom Dulahan’s mother had turned into vampires aided the coup. The guard’s young commander, Mikase Shirkan, uncovered the conspiracy and fought her way free, but lacked the forces or surviving heir needed to challenge Meltor.
To distract Clairnia from the destruction caused by his coup, Meltor ordered the construction of the Everlasting Circus, a city-sized spectacle that never closes. His government began withdrawing Clairnia from the War of Horrors and turned instead toward political conflict abroad and against the kingdom’s great lords. He now hunts his niece, Euphemia Fon Umerits, to prevent a counter-coup.
