Divine Champions
A champion is a mortal chosen to serve as a god’s instrument in the world - something far rarer, and stranger, than an ordinary cleric. A champion is not simply the most devout of a god’s faithful; the title is chosen, not earned through ambition.
Origin
The role is as old as the gods’ return to the world. After the Collapse, when the gods first walked the land again, they chose mortal representatives to herald their coming and to help the survivors endure the aftermath of the catastrophe. These first chosen were called Apostles; only over the long years did the name settle into champion.
What Makes a Champion
Most gods have no use for a zealot who merely wishes to fill the role for its own sake. To be a champion is to become the right tool for the god’s purpose - to serve not only the deity but the essence of what they stand for, and often to understand that essence more deeply than the devout ever do. Tellingly, some champions were chosen who did not even know their god beforehand: Bolo is said not to have known who Thoth was when he was chosen.
For this reason, raw devotion is rarely enough. It is held, for instance, that Pan has never had a champion - by one common theory because his faithful “fixate on the trees and miss the forest,” and so seldom grasp the whole of him.
