Physical Appearance
A man of almost seventy-five, born in the cold ranges of the Evercold - still as spry as a man of fifty, though his back aches on cold nights, his hands sometimes tremble, and he has begun to nod off before the fire while the sun is still up.
Personality
Once “strong, passionate, unrelenting and unyielding” - a hard, warmongering zealot who chased laws and wars until he forgot it was justice and peace he sought. In his later years he became a compassionate, sympathetic peacemaker and judge, his old conviction undimmed but turned at last toward mercy. He carries still the guilt of driving his son away.
Biography
Bare Formidler, called the Arbitrer of Right, grew up a cleric of Týr, the god of extreme and warlike justice. He fought in the War of Horrors, during which his son Jafner was born; their bond was loose, and Bare - a hard father - could not abide that the war’s exposure to many faiths had made the boy more religiously open. Somewhere in the midst of the war, Jafner broke from his father and fled to join a monk order in the Hub.
Unable to bear that his son had fled because of him, Bare underwent a profound change. He turned from Týr to Forseti, the far gentler god of peace, justice, and fellowship, found great depth in the new god’s teachings, and - at his wife’s counsel - chose to give Jafner time rather than chase him, sending letters in the meanwhile. He left the war to become a judge, as many of Forseti’s clerics do, and over twenty-five years became renowned across the north for fair and thorough judgement, favoured by his god with insight and communion.
When the letters went unanswered, Bare went at last to the monastery - only to learn that Jafner had vanished shortly before a cabal of fiend-worshippers was discovered among the monks, and that the grandmaster suspected his son’s involvement. He and Vita - who revealed herself, then, to be one of the four High Priestesses of Frigga, gifted with prophecy - resolved to set out and search for Jafner separately, to find and help him if they could, and to prepare for the dreadful possibility that, if he were truly lost to the demons, they might have to end his life.
