Gilles Fauconnier

Gilles Fauconnier is the philologist who wrote *Say What You Mean*, the definitive study of Sylvan, the language of the fey.

Work

Fauconnier’s thesis is that no creature not born fey can truly speak Sylvan - that the tongue is shaped by minds without a subconscious, that always mean what they say and assume themselves perfectly understood, and that perceive time so differently that the very grammar lies beyond mortal reach. He traces how even fey-descended peoples fall short: centaurs become honest to a fault and miss all wordplay, while satyrs treat words as binding contracts yet lie freely in Common.
