Centaur
Bloodline Twisted Races Origin Wished into being by Pan Hallmark Ideological devotion; cannot easily lie Patron god Pan Language Common, Sylvan
“We often say ‘lying centaurs’ to allude to an impossibility happening. Yet I suspect it is their unrelenting dedication that Children see as the true impossibility.”
- Dimbaal Noretso Grim, Old Storyteller
The centaurs of Thelemar are a proud and ideological people, deeply tied to the natural world and the forces of the Fey. Though not fully fey themselves, their connection to the Feywyld shapes their culture, language, and worldview. They are known for unwavering dedication to their ideals, their tribal way of life, and a near-inability to deceive - a trait born of their ancestral tongue.
Origins and Heritage
Centaurs trace their origins to the age when the Feywyld first revealed itself to the material world. Among the fey who emerged was Pan, a wild and passionate being who proved himself worthy of divinity and was granted a single wish. He wished for beings that embodied both the freedom of the Feywyld and the grounding of the material world - and from that wish two peoples were shaped: the centaurs, fierce and tribal warriors driven by loyalty, and the satyrs, carefree wanderers who embraced pleasure and individualism. Though their paths diverge, both carry the mark of Pan.
Nature and Ideology
Centaurs are inherently ideological, each tribe devoted to a chosen cause - protecting nature, training heroes, pursuing wild magic. These causes define their very existence, and centaurs rarely stray from them. Most grow up speaking Sylvan, the fey tongue in which intentional lying is impossible; this makes outright deceit a foreign, deeply uncomfortable concept, and younger centaurs may not grasp the idea of a lie at all. This honesty often puts them at odds with intrigue-driven societies like Clairnia.
They are dedicated to the point of extremism - a centaur is never merely practical or weary but fiercely so. When a centaur’s convictions do change, the shift tends to be dramatic and total, swinging to the opposite extreme.
Society
Tribal Structure and Worship
Centaurs organize into independent tribes, each bound to a cause. Notable among them:
- The Rediviva Tribe - guardians of the forests, who view civilization as a creeping blight.
- The Chiron Tribe - trainers of heroes, devoted to shaping future champions.
- The Nessus Tribe - feared masters of poisons, curses, and forbidden magic, who believe themselves harbingers of fate.
- The Magorian Tribe - keepers of arcane mysteries who barter magical secrets at a steep price.
- The Aspid (Shield) Tribe - reclusive guardians of the Tree of Pan, an ancient sacred pine standing in a hidden, will-o’-wisp-haunted lake; they permit only a controlled harvest of their blue forest for pigment.
Most centaurs worship Pan - god of nature, passion, wild magic, and beasts - a complex deity who is sometimes trickster, sometimes protector. Some tribes also revere gods tied to their particular cause.
Culture
Language
Centaurs speak Common and Sylvan. They can deceive in other languages, but doing so feels deeply unnatural to them.
Relations
Centaurs primarily inhabit the Theocracy and the lands around Pondeciet Forest. In the Theocracy they are held sacred to Pan - counted not as a twisted race but as beings touched by the gods - and coexist peacefully there and in the Lexalian Republic. Their relationship with Clairnia is strained, for Clairnians find centaur honesty and ideological rigidity inconvenient at best, dangerous at worst. Different tribes treat one another as kin even across wildly different causes.
History
Origins
Though wished into being by Pan, centaurs are still counted among the Twisted Races outside the Theocracy - a categorization the Holy Theocracy of Olympus pointedly rejects.
