Overview
The language of fey creatures is elusive and often perplexing - it is said that no amount of study lets one speak it truly fluently. Sylvan sounds flowery, with song-like qualities, and carries a unique trait: lying in Sylvan, by intention, is impossible. Clever wordplay and trickery of phrasing still pass, but any attempt to utter a clear falsehood stops in its tracks. It is spoken throughout the Feywyld, and also by Centaurs, Satyrs, and Firbolgs, all of whom trace their origins to the Feywyld.
Phonology & Script
Sylvan is flowery and song-like, written in its own flowing Sylvan script. Its defining magic is the truth constraint: a speaker physically cannot voice an intentional falsehood - though misdirection, omission, and wordplay remain wide-open arts. Its corruption, Stygian, sounds the same but lacks this constraint.
The Untranslatable Tongue
The philologist Gilles Fauconnier argues that no creature not born fey can truly speak Sylvan. The tongue is shaped by minds that seem to have no subconscious - fey always mean exactly what they say, and assume themselves perfectly understood (and by other fey, they are). Their alien sense of time runs through the grammar itself, putting true fluency beyond mortal reach. Even fey-blooded peoples fall short: centaurs grow honest to a fault and miss every layer of wordplay, while satyrs treat their words as binding contracts yet lie without trouble in Common.
Speakers
- Fey - the native speakers of the Feywyld.
- Centaurs and Satyrs - fey-touched peoples (and, in the Holy Theocracy, blessed by Pan).
- Firbolgs - who speak it alongside Jötunn.
