Kaios
Kaios
Also known as Caius · “the Red Researcher” Titles Founder and first king of Kios Profession Scholar, naturalist, engineer Reign Founder–c. 948 (handed power to Melontikos in 948) Status Deceased
Kaios - remembered in Kios as “the Red Researcher” for the crimson robes he favored - was the curious, reclusive scholar who founded the city that still bears a worn echo of his name. In 903 he settled in the ruins of ancient Loreshia, deep in the Amsian Valley, to study the engineering and lore lost when that city fell. He raised himself a tower, sustained himself with advanced food-preservation and a deep knowledge of local plants, and was content to be left alone.
He was not left alone for long. A fishing village grew beside the river; Kaios’s quiet competence - driving off beasts and bandits, rescuing fishermen swept out in a storm - won the settlers’ trust. Newcomers kept arriving, kept being won over, and kept staying, until the aging scholar found himself running the town that had gathered around his tower. The locals took to calling him “King Kaios,” half in affection and half because it made the modest old man blush. By 927 the town was a city: “the City of Kaios.”
Legacy
Feeling his years, Kaios set out to secure the city’s future. He chose a worthy heir in young Melontikos, and - wary that his strange reputation might draw suspicion onto a dynasty - he composed an official history of the city that smoothed away anything that might unsettle neighbors or rivals, emphasizing community, leadership, and honest engineering. That sanitized account is the one the world still reads as *The Rise, Reign and Fall of Swadia*. He died around 948, having succeeded at both of his final tasks.
