Zholk

Zholk is a bugbear warrior and master storyteller of Gilded Requiem, a former knight of the Masked Bastion forever seeking a place where he can be both an individual and part of something larger.

Biography

Zholk was born into a clan of nomadic bugbear mercenaries; his father a renowned ambusher, his mother a sharp-witted bard, who shaped him into a true bugbear - fierce in battle, captivating in story - though he always harbored an unspoken longing for connection beyond his clan’s competitive bonds. When raiders killed his parents and scattered the clan, the wounded boy wandered half-dead to the Goldenpaw Haven, the orphanage of the paladins Alicia and Thula, who took him in without hesitation. Their quiet, selfless strength reshaped him, and he learned to turn his storytelling toward comforting others rather than glorifying himself - yet he never quite felt he belonged.

Chasing rumor of a passing bugbear clan, Zholk joined them, only to discover to his horror that they worshipped Maricha, the Fiend Lord of Deception, and boasted that one of their number would be chosen as the demon’s apostle. Unable to abide the horrors they wrought, he turned himself and the clan in to a nearby town. In his cell he was approached by a knight of the famed Masked Bastion, who praised his courage and offered him a place in the order. Donning the mask, he at last felt he belonged - though his storyteller’s heart chafed against the order’s demand for anonymity.

On a mission he met Mùchén, a charismatic mercenary of Gilded Requiem whose controlled fury and deep bonds enchanted him, and who saw Zholk as an individual rather than a faceless protector. Drawn by the hope of a place that honored both his self and his need for community, Zholk bid the order farewell and sought out Mùchén’s company, carrying the Bastion’s tenets with him. He has loved Mùchén ever since - a love the tormented cleric returns but will not allow himself to embrace - and chases it still, like a moth after the sun.
