Bugbear

“A Bugbear’s greatest weapon isn’t the club in their hand - it’s the tale on their lips. Of course, the club helps too.”

  • Dimbaal Noretso Grim, Old Storyteller

Bugbears blend stealth, brutality, and a deeply ingrained love of storytelling. Nomadic mercenaries who move through the world striking from ambush, they are driven beneath that fierce exterior by a cultural obsession with narrative - a compulsion to create, embellish, and share the stories that define their place in the world.

Personality

Renowned across Thelemar for ambush and assassination, bugbears use size, strength, and stealth to end fights before they begin - valuable assets in the mercenary world. But they seek more than survival through bloodshed: they tell stories of their victories to elevate their standing and to make meaning of often-violent lives. To a bugbear, the truth of a tale matters less than its power to captivate, which makes them notorious unreliable narrators, forever embellishing and reshaping their own legends.

Society

A bugbear’s social standing rests not only on prowess but on the ability to tell a compelling story about it - stories are a form of currency, and a bugbear whose deeds don’t measure up to their tales risks isolation or open conflict. They live in constant movement, forming small, temporary mercenary bands that break apart as easily as they form. Caring little for abstract ideals like honor or loyalty, they prize results; betrayal and ruthlessness are simply tools, which makes them dangerous and their societies unstable.

Culture

Language

Bugbears speak Common and Gob, the honorific-bound tongue shared by goblins and hobgoblins.

History

Origins

The goblinoids of Thelemar are believed to have been created by three Arch-Fiends of Mictlān, in an attempt to gain a foothold in the prime material plane. Unlike gnolls and tieflings, whose tragic origins can be readily verified, the goblinoids’ story is no clear-cut thing: some choose to worship their so-called makers, while others despise the very notion of being created by fiends and seek instead to integrate into society. Bugbears are said to be the work of Maricha, the Great Deceiver.
