GUNAM is the foremost seat of learning in the old world - a great university raised upon a mountainside, its painted domes, wide windows, and reddish-stone halls linked by bridges that criss-cross the campus. It sits amid fields of black basalt left by a volcanic eruption a little over two decades before the 1520s, a stark setting that only sharpens the splendour of the place; newcomers often greet their first sight of it with the same thought - how was such a thing ever built?

The university keeps departments of archeology, linguistics, anthropology, and history, among others, and its doctorates run some eight years. Students of talent but no means may pay their way by working for the professors, assisting in their studies. It was here that the disgraced archaeologist Nicholas Ballard sent his grandson Corian in 1523, and from its halls that scholars such as Kimyo and Yendal Applewhistle went out into the world.
