Aegis Dragon
Aegis Dragon (Protection)
Type Dragon · Safety Domain Protection, defense from violence Disposition Vigilant, strategic, steadfast Specialty Abjuration magic
A Safety Dragon embodying security from harm, protection, and defense against violence.
Description
Aegis Dragons embody protection against chaos, creating zones of stability and security in a dangerous world. Their scales resemble perfectly interlocking shields of varying sizes - some inscribed with miniature protective runes that glow with subtle light when danger approaches. Their wings form complete protective canopies when extended, their membranes patterned to redirect harmful energies away from whatever lies beneath, and their tail curls into a perfect circle at rest, marking a boundary that even powerful magical forces hesitate to cross. Their eyes scan their surroundings with methodical precision, their posture suggesting perpetual readiness.
They are often master abjurers, weaving protective spells across vast areas and great numbers of subjects. As they age, they extend their protection beyond the physical: an ancient Aegis Dragon might create zones where harmful magic cannot function, or where oaths of peace are supernaturally enforced - places mortals come to use as safe havens. From their signature power comes their name: the Aegis, by which their scales become so impenetrable that they grow briefly impervious to harm, defying even the gravest blows.
Behavior
Aegis Dragons are vigilant guardians who establish regular patrol patterns around their territories. They feed primarily on threatening creatures, particularly those that prey on the weak and defenseless, and they collect defensive artifacts - legendary shields, the architectural plans of mighty fortresses, magical barriers preserved from ancient civilizations. Strategic thinkers who prepare for many contingencies, they speak in clear, direct language that leaves little room for misinterpretation.
Lair
These dragons establish territories around vulnerable communities or important sites in need of protection. Their lairs incorporate defensive architecture - concentric walls, strategic choke points, secure inner sanctums to shelter those in need. The entrance typically features impressive but practical fortifications, with layers of security growing more sophisticated as one moves inward. It is said that an Aegis Dragon’s lair has never been breached.
Relations with Mortals
Aegis Dragons actively seek out vulnerable communities threatened by overwhelming forces, offering protection in exchange for stewardship rather than servitude. They establish defensive networks across regions, training and equipping militias in multiple settlements to support one another. They form deep bonds with military leaders, and the most devoted may willingly merge their life force with physical fortifications during dire sieges, transforming ordinary strongholds into semi-sentient defensive structures that endure for centuries after the dragon’s physical form has passed.
One notable example is the founding of the Stoneice Spire, home of the School of Abjuration: the archmage who founded the school studied under Ishigori, an ancient and powerful Aegis Dragon who helped both his research and the raising of the very tower from which the school still operates.
Aegis Dragons can also be dangerous. They refuse to back down from any battle where a life is at stake, and if they identify someone in need of protection they may throw all reason to the wind to provide it - sometimes ignoring the context entirely. Some criminals have exploited this, deliberately coming under an Aegis Dragon’s protection to escape justice while basking in the dragon’s shelter despite their crimes.
Notable
- Ishigori - an ancient Aegis Dragon who mentored the founder of the School of Abjuration and helped create the Stoneice Spire.
- Tasukeru, the Dawn Dragon and Warden of the First Light - another celebrated Safety Dragon, credited with the great protective working *Tasukeru’s Shield of Dawn*, which wraps a whole company in sweeping protection.
