Description

End Dragons emanate an aura of finality wherever they go; the very air around them seems to grow still and cold, as though time itself halts in their presence. Their skeletal features are hauntingly intricate, with bone-like protrusions forming natural armor along the spine and skull, and their skin is often translucent, revealing a constant flow of shadowy essence beneath - like smoke trapped under ice. As they move, their scales shed in mesmerizing patterns, leaving trails of fine dust that hang suspended a moment before dissipating. Their eyes are depthless voids that pull light inward, and their tattered wings stretch thin as burial shrouds yet strong as steel, patterned with funerary symbols from ancient civilizations.

The dust they shed is prized by necromancers to enhance their spells. Their blood runs black and cold and is said to slow aging if consumed in small quantities - though those who drink it often report disturbing dreams of their own demise.

As they age, End Dragons develop the ability to perceive the approximate time of death of any creature they meet, lending them an uncanny sense of when to strike or when to offer a bargain to the desperate. Older still, they wield a power often called Death Shroud - the ability to temporarily separate souls from bodies, allowing communion with the recently deceased, or to inflict a taste of death upon the living.

Behavior

Unlike dragons who hunt actively, End Dragons lie in wait for prey to come to them, conserving their energy. They feed not only on flesh but on the final moments of their victims, sometimes keeping creatures alive at the very threshold of death for extended periods. When they leave their lairs, it is more often to manipulate from the shadows than to wreak open havoc - their intellect, magic, and unique sight of mortal lifespans making their schemes intricate and convoluted. They are methodical and rarely rushed, speaking in soft, measured tones that carry clearly despite their quietness. When threatened they prefer to retreat, letting pursuers exhaust themselves before striking when least expected. Many a junior adventurer has met their end assuming that an End Dragon’s patience is weakness; when truly provoked, they are capable of decimation on an unthinkable scale.

Lair

End Dragons make their lairs in places already touched by death - ancient battlefields, mass graves, abandoned cemeteries - and their presence deepens the desolation, withering plants and driving animals away for miles. The vicinity is often infested with undead, some raised intentionally, others spawned from the negative energy the dragon suffuses through the area. An entrance is typically marked by unnatural silence and scattered bone fragments; within, walls may be adorned with preserved remains arranged in artistic patterns, enchanted against decay, and the air carries a chill no heat can dispel. Many lairs spiral inward, symbolizing the descent into death, with the dragon’s chamber at the center as the final destination.

Relations with Mortals

Some cultures develop ritual relationships with End Dragons, offering sacrifices in exchange for protection from plagues or unnatural deaths. The dragons sometimes attach themselves to ruling dynasties, appearing at moments of succession to whisper secrets of longevity to monarchs obsessed with immortality, steering whole kingdoms toward necromancy across generations. Rather than destroy a village outright, an End Dragon will often render the surrounding lands uninhabitable and then offer itself as the only protection against the encroaching desolation. They are known to sponsor promising necromancers, trading ancient knowledge for service and ultimately transforming these mortals into liches or death knights who spread their influence further.

Notable

  • Kurai Shi, the End Dragon of the Last Silence - the most storied of all End Dragons, to whom Thelemar’s spellcasters credit the dread working *Kurai Shi’s Blackening Death*, which withers its victims with overwhelming necrotic death.
