Amilius Grandt is a renowned demon-slayer - a warlock sworn close to the celestials - famous enough that few who have travelled the world have not heard his name. Where most warlocks bargain with darker powers, Amilius turns his against the fiends, and he is numbered among the world’s first fiend-hunters; his story is bound up with that of the Humble Few, the fellowship that would in time become the Center, and with a good deal more besides. In other, less reverent circles he is remembered as a mad sorcerer (under the name Emilius Grandet), and it is he who champions the controversial Violent Past theory of the Empire.

For all his fame as a slayer, Amilius is remembered as much for whom he gathers up. He travels with his companion Pamina, and has a habit of taking in lost and wayward souls to set them on a path. He met the wandering minotaur D’ok Zingbir amid the war against the Horrors and took him under his patronage; and he abducted - then, to her surprise, mentored - the apathetic goblin pickpocket Pisma Janbir.
