Isandro Íroas

Isandro Íroas was the firebrand who rose during the War of Horrors to become Rex of the Holy Theocracy of Olympus, and the founder of the Holy Company - the order better known as the Inquisition.

Biography

During the War of Horrors, Íroas led a movement that pointed at magic as the source of all the world’s suffering - from The Collapse to the creation of the horrors to the war itself. He preached that there was only one solution: the complete suppression of all magic not granted by the gods, for only the gods could be trusted with such power and its distribution.

His movement carried him to the throne as Rex, and he made good on his word by founding the Holy Company - an elite order of warriors raised to bring down rogue mages and halt the spread of unchecked arcana, first across the Theocracy and eventually throughout the world.

The Road to the Throne

Long before the war, Íroas was a Paladin of Devotion with unconcealed political ambition. From a young age he meant to shape the course of the nation, and through a distinguished military career he won the friendship of powerful figures across the People’s Councils; many marked him early as a future Rex and helped speed his rise. It was the War of Horrors that pushed him to found a ruling party of his own, with a doctrine sharply at odds with the sitting government.

Íroas did not believe the House of Horrors could be beaten head-on - a conviction that only hardened as the war ground on. His doctrine, “descend to ascend,” called for the Theocracy to withdraw from open war: to let the House settle on its island while keeping it in check through small, precise strikes, espionage, and economic pressure. This became the policy of his reign, though in practice the withdrawal was agonizingly slow, dragging on for eight years amid foreign entanglements, civil strife at home, and unexpected blows from the House itself - chief among them the Breaking of the Gates, the name given beyond the island to the counterattack that first revealed the House’s power to manufacture horrors.

Rex

Though Íroas was lawfully elected, the opposing party never accepted the result, branding him a fascist and crying fraud and stolen votes. The charges were baseless, but they inflamed the old guard and every enemy of his reforms into eight years of militant resistance - a period remembered as the War of the Hills. Between that internal war and the war on the horrors, his reforms were checked at every turn, leaving him forever hungry for the changes he had meant to bring.

His first and most lasting act on taking power was to raise the Magical Inquisition - a militant order built to hunt mages and monsters alike. Modeled on the small, self-reliant strike teams of the fiend-hunters, it quickly earned a fearsome reputation, and its training gave the Theocratic army a tactical edge that became the bedrock of Íroas’s power.
