Tortle

Tortles are a reclusive, wandering people whose entire existence revolves around the journey of life. These nomads live exceptionally long lives - often reaching five centuries - spent exploring the world in search of something they themselves do not always fully comprehend: a special place, an answer to a question, a goal that must be fulfilled.

The Wanderer’s Quest

Every tortle believes their life holds a purpose - a unique “quest” or question they must answer through their travels. It is not clear at birth, nor imposed by any magic, but a deeply personal journey of self-discovery ingrained into their core. It is said that all tortles are born seeking their quest, and that at some point - physical or spiritual - it dawns on them in sudden realization, and only then does the “true” journey begin. A quest may be as abstract as seeking enlightenment or as concrete as finding the perfect place to build a sanctuary.

Society

Nomads of the World

Tortles have no homeland or cultural base; they claim no territory and build no permanent settlements, and their numbers are few and scattered. They carry their homes on their backs - their sturdy shells serving as both shelter and protection - and make temporary homes wherever they wander, from coastlines to jungles to deserts. Most marry and raise children, though families split once hatchlings can survive on their own.

Wisdom and Counsel

Though fiercely independent, tortles share philosophical beliefs centered on harmony with nature, respect for life, and the pursuit of wisdom. Drawn to places of learning, they are prized as advisors in universities, libraries, and arcane institutions, their slow and deliberate thinking bringing clarity to hard problems. Some have chronicled entire ages as living archives. They impose their beliefs on no one, letting each soul interpret its own path.

War of Horrors

One of the few times tortles acted as a people was during the war against the House of Horrors. Though not warriors by nature, their sense of duty to the world they wandered drove many to join the allied forces, bringing tactical wisdom and magical knowledge that proved invaluable. The deed left a lasting mark: while its memory was fresh, other races regarded tortles with great respect, associating them with wisdom and selflessness - though as memory fades, so too does recognition of their part, and they return once more to being the world’s wandering hermits.

Tortles speak Common, carrying with them the words and stories of every distant land they have crossed.

Tortles are counted among the Twisted Races that emerged after The Collapse.
