Children of the Empire

“We were an empire, once. So big you could not see the end of it even if you stood amongst the stars. But our fall was swifter than a comet streaking across the sky.”

  • Dimbaal Noretso Grim, Old Storyteller

The Children of the Empire are the mortals who once lived in The Empire - the most common sentient creatures in Thelemar. They are a people of perseverance who rose from the ashes of the Empire and reconquered the world, driven by the ambition to reclaim what was lost and rule once more.

Description

The Children resemble the humans of other worlds, but carry traces of the utopian society they once lived in - echoes that can feel out of place in Thelemar’s pseudo-medieval world, yet make perfect sense as the remnants of a post-utopian people. They vary widely in height and build, and incline to no particular alignment.

Personality

From the fall of a perfect utopia to a country overrun by hellish creatures, the Children have endured hardship after hardship - and the result is an unbreakable perseverance, a need to stand up again and keep fighting for the future despite fear and demoralization.

Society

Culture

In the years after magic returned to the world, the Children began exhibiting strange talents, until people everywhere found themselves each capable of some minor magical feat. This gift goes by many names - The Affinity, The Gift, The Residue, The Change - and is thought to be either a boon from the new gods or a faint return of the Empire’s lost magic. It shapes society at every level, from commoners born with useful talents that lift them up the social ladder to lowlifes who turn their gifts to insidious ends.

Cultures

Though similar in body, the Children are profoundly diverse in culture, shaped by the nation they call home: the hardy Lexalian north, the devout Theocracian east, the mercantile Jaknian south, the lush Clairnian southeast, and the cosmopolitan Hubian center.

Language

The Children speak Common - which evolved from the old tongue of the Empire - in the dialect of their culture (Lexalian, Olympian, Jaknian, Clairnian, or Hubian).

History

Origins

The Children give their name to the first of the three bloodlines - the survivors of the Empire who rose from its ashes to reclaim the world.
