Tabaxi

“They roam the lands as leaves on the wind, chasing the stories the jungle whispers. Each path is a thread in the grand weave, and every step brings them closer to understanding the world’s eternal dance.”

  • Dimbaal Noretso Grim, Old Storyteller

The Tabaxi are a feline people of the Boundless Jungle of Clairnia - nomadic and elusive, bound not to any land but to the cycles of life, knowledge, and freedom.

Personality

Tabaxi are defined by unrelenting curiosity and an insatiable love of discovery; their whole society is built around the quest for knowledge and exploration, which draws them to ancient ruins, magical phenomena, and forgotten places. Their constant movement can seem disorienting to outsiders, but to the Tabaxi it is a reflection of their deepest spiritual beliefs.

Society

The clans live in constant motion, marking temporary camps with simple structures soon abandoned. Each clan is independent, governed by a council of nine chosen on merit rather than age or bloodline - the most talented hunters, spellcasters, and storytellers hold sway, but no leader is permanent. This decentralised system keeps them resilient and adaptable in the face of outside threats.

The Clans

The Tabaxi are divided into many independent clans, each named for a mood of the jungle. A great number were drawn into the Terrible Children Wars against the Clairnian houses:

Interracial Relations

A long history of being hunted has left deep scars. Most Tabaxi harbour a profound distrust of anyone not their own - sometimes bordering on xenophobia - and many clans refuse outside contact unless absolutely necessary. The younger and most curious sometimes prove more open, but trust is hard-won and easily lost.

Enslavement and Resistance

Beyond the open wars, many Tabaxi live in bondage. Across the fiefdoms of Clairnia, where they are reviled as a twisted race, Tabaxi are enslaved and abused. Over generations they answered with quiet defiance, developing a secret martial art to preserve their culture and resist their oppressors - and hiding it in plain sight as a performance, a celebration of dance and music their slavers never thought to fear. This discipline, the Way of the Shackled, turns the steps of a dance into the footwork of a fighter. It is from this hidden art, the truth tells, that the sword-and-song discipline the wider world calls bladesinging truly descends - its Tabaxi roots buried beneath cover-tales of a northern mage who learned the blade, or of a bard who taught mages to sing.

Culture

Language

The Tabaxi speak Common and Felis, the jungle-born tongue of their clans.

Religion

The Tabaxi are deeply religious, keeping the faith of the Nimble Pantheon led by the goddess KITTY and her Circle of Nine. At its heart is the Cycle - Birth, Growth, Death, and the Return - and the rare, revered Dismantling, by which a soul that has seen enough dissolves into pure energy and is absorbed back into the jungle. Their most sacred charge is the protection of the Mitsiks, KITTY’s near-extinct first creation, and each year they keep Mitsik Month, when the young are initiated into adulthood and clan roles are chosen.

History

Origins

Tabaxi are counted among the Twisted Races that emerged after The Collapse.

Recorded History

For as long as they have roamed the jungle, the Tabaxi have been hunted by outsiders who prize their luxurious pelts. The Children waged brutal wars against them - the most infamous the Terrible Children Wars, which decimated whole clans and drove the Tabaxi, in desperation, to the creation of horrors to survive. These dark memories linger, pushing some clans deeper into the jungle and others into wary alliances.

  • The Tabaxi’s wartime turn to horror-creation is a notable link to the House of Horrors and warrants reconciliation with that settlement’s history.
