“The caprini are a headstrong and protective race of peoples, fueled by a strong desire to remain undisturbed by the goings-on of others.”
- Dothus Petri, Emissary to the New World
The Caprini are goat-folk of the New World - simple farmers who keep apart from the wider world, living by a strict “live and let live” creed in small mountain and hillside villages.
Society
Sheltered Societies
Caprini keep clear of other societies’ bustle, farming quietly and rarely traveling; when they do, it is in small trader caravans offering wares and services for food and shelter. Few things uproot a caprini village - disease, imminent danger, or infiltration by those who would lead it astray. Generally friendly, individual caprini can still be aggressive toward anyone who has wronged them; but a caprini who makes a friend makes one for life, and is fiercely protective of any they treat as kin.
Herd Mentality
Caprini are followers, not leaders, rallying around the loudest and most leader-like among them. This makes their villages vulnerable to infiltration: a strong leonin tribe might slay a caprini elder and turn the confused villagers into loyal warriors, or a charismatic charlatan might con a whole village. In the end, though, a particularly virtuous caprini usually leads the village back to its old neutrality - and it is these incidents that drive caprini to close themselves off from other peoples.
Heritage and Faith
Like tortles and tabaxi, caprini bear the marks of their bestial heritage: cloven hooves, thick coats, and horns recalling their goat, sheep, and ibex roots. They see themselves as farmers from birth, nurturing fields and orchards, and while not deeply devout, caprini villages often keep small shrines to various nature and agricultural deities. Three lineages are known - the swift, long-horned Cliffside, the sturdy Highland, and the thickly-wooled, trade-friendly Woolly caprini.
Culture
Language
Caprini speak Caprini - a tongue of bleats and grunts - and Beastspeech, the shared trade tongue of the New World.
