Reepicheep

“The mousefolk were, and still are, the most welcoming of the settlers of Acadia. With that said, the Reepicheep (as they liked to be called) seemed not willing to discuss certain aspects of the new world, and outright refused to trade in information - to the point of leaving Acadia when pushed too much on the subject.”

  • Dothus Petri, Emissary to the New World

The Reepicheep, or mousefolk, are small, communal beast-folk of the New World. Standing a little over two feet tall, they go unnoticed in their day-to-day lives - and were the friendliest of the New World peoples to the settlers of Acadia, though they guarded certain secrets of their land jealously.

Society

Home and Hearth

The mousefolk are resourceful and tenacious, building homes in the dark and forgotten corners of the world - city slums, deep forests, scorching deserts, arctic tundras, distant port cities. They favor hunting, trade, and craft over farming, and their caravans are no easy target, guarded by skilled archers. Above all, family extends beyond blood: an individual’s whole community is treated as kin, and new warrens arise near one another until they grow and merge into one. Personal wealth and glory mean little; nearly all effort goes to the good of the community.

Artisans and Adventurers

The Reepicheep love art, literature, song, and craft, and may spend a lifetime perfecting a single trade; true masterworks are rarely seen by outsiders, preserved and passed down the generations. To be a keeper of lore and heritage is among their highest honors. Those who do not learn a trade often pursue esoteric knowledge or train as defenders, rangers, spiritual leaders, covert agents - or wander the world as adventurers-for-hire. Two closely related lineages exist: the bookish, civilized Softpaw and the wild, watchful Meadowgard.

Culture

Language

Reepicheep speak Squeak Speak and Beastspeech, the New World trade tongue, and most also learn Common to converse with the peoples whose lands they cross. They place great value on written records, encouraging everyone to keep journals of their deeds.
