Ludai

“Yuk!”

  • Dothus Petri, Emissary to the New World

The Ludai, or slug people, are an agricultural mollusk-folk of the New World. So rarely seen that many in Acadia took them for a wives’ tale, they are in truth a quiet, peaceable people - the one the explorer Elizabeth glimpsed in the swamp appeared to be calmly farming before it slipped away.

Society

Secretive Farmers

Ludai are native to grasslands near forests and mountains, building villages in hidden valleys or on plains shielded by thick woods. The slime they travel upon is a natural fertilizer that speeds the growth of plants, making them gifted, if reclusive, agrarians. Their alien forms - shifting torsos, bulbous eyestalks, slow gait - unsettle other humanoids, and a few individuals bear extra eyestalks, often a sign of magical talent. Their skin ranges from dull or bright blues to vibrant striped yellows depending on their tribe.

Culture

Language

Ludai speak Beastspeech and Ludain - a complex chemical, pheromonal language spoken in close proximity to another ludai’s facial stalks, and translated only with difficulty. Their mouths are ill-suited to Common speech, and their slow, slurred words have led some to wrongly believe them dull-witted; in truth they simply struggle to express their most complex thoughts to other peoples.
