The Giant Pantheon

The Giant Pantheon belonged to a race that existed long before the Great War. Their gods are Thrym (frost), Surtr (fire), Atlas (clouds), Neringa (stone), Grendel (hills), and Daidarabotchi (storm), and over them all reigned Gaia, the Mother of Giants - though she lies imprisoned deep in Tartarus.

History

At the end of the Great War, the giants were imprisoned as an entire race for refusing to bow to gods not their own; being few in number, this was possible. But the giants began spreading through the world, seeking to dominate it - and unlike the gods, they were far from helpless without magic, lording it over mortals.

It was Odin who found the solution. Exploiting the fact that many of his own pantheon - himself included - were tied in some way to the giants, he and Loki and Týr parleyed with the giant gods. They spoke of a great war the new world needed, of how the other gods would oppose it, and of how the giants must wait before any total war could be waged. Odin proposed founding an entire religion upon “the Last Battle” - a cataclysmic event in which giants and mortals would meet in a decisive clash, the victor to rule the world. Mortals, he argued, would embrace such a faith, and it would let the giants one day wage their war without the other gods preventing it.

The giants loved the idea, but raised a problem: if they remained in the world, mortals would hunt them and war could not be delayed. Loki proposed scattering them across places mortals could not easily reach. So the giants were dispersed - the frost giants behind the great northern ridge, the fire giants to an isolated isle off the coast of Clairnia, the stone giants to the mountains of the New World, the hill giants into the vast forest, the cloud giants to an isle in the sky above the central sea, and the storm giants, who built great ships and sailed south into the unknown. Each race was given a hidden temple on the continent, the easier to commune with the gods and, when the day comes, to invade and begin Ragnarök.
