The Nimble Pantheon

The Nimble Pantheon is the close-guarded faith of the Tabaxi of Clairnia’s Boundless Jungle: the creator goddess KITTY and the nine lesser deities she raised, the Circle of Nine. Unlike most faiths of Thelemar, it asks its people not to die for their gods but to live for them.

History

The goddess KITTY is believed to have arrived in the world around the year 650, drawn to Thelemar’s newly emerging magic and wishing to contribute creations of her own. Her first was the Mitsik, made of her own essence - but the Children of the world soon began hunting the Mitsiks for their power, and their already small numbers dwindled. Furious and disillusioned, KITTY made a second creation that could survive in the world: the Tabaxi, drawn from the moon, rocks, rivers, grass, and from joy, sadness, and curiosity, mixed with the essence of the Children and with her own. Their first and most sacred task was to protect the remaining Mitsiks.

To help them, KITTY chose nine who stood out and gifted them with power and eternal life - the Circle of Nine. Once they spread among the forming tribes, teaching and guiding; these days most are believed to have retired into the Boundless Jungle, leaving the Tabaxi to grow on their own.

The Cycle

The Tabaxi believe in a Cycle of souls - Birth, Growth, Death, and the Return - in which each death gives rise to a new life and no soul is ever lost. The only way to end the Cycle is the Dismantling: when a Tabaxi feels they have Returned and seen enough, they request an audience with the Nine, walk through their lives together, and choose to dissolve mind, body, and soul into pure energy that is absorbed back into the world - into the trees, the rivers, the Tabaxi, and the remaining Mitsiks.

Worship and Practices

Every ten nights the Tabaxi speak the prayers of KITTY and whisper to the Nine. Their great rite is the week-long Festival of the Cycle, held during the Mitsik Month, celebrating the natural cycle of life: tribes feast on their own for six days and gather on the seventh at a sacred site known only to them, the Ninth resting place. No Tabaxi skips the Lighting of the Star, in which each lights a unique lantern with a spark from Luck and sends it to the stars to commemorate the fallen Mitsiks and Tabaxi. Those born under the sign of the Mitsik are considered greatly fortunate.

The Tabaxi are deeply private about their faith. Their gods do not wish them to die in war for their sake; rather, they devote their lives to living - researching, growing, loving, hunting - as the gods intend. To act against that will (to murder a clanmate, or to share the Tabaxi’s secrets with the unworthy) is to be punished.
