The Norse Pantheon
The Norse Pantheon is the faith of the Lexalian Republic, a religion of proud warriors fighting to outlast the end of the world. It is, by its own telling, the most noble of religions: its gods are good and worthy of service even though the faith holds that the evil giants will one day rise and destroy them.
Tenets
By Norse tradition, the world was fashioned from the meeting of the elemental planes - out of ice and fire came Ymir, father of the jötnar - and is centred on Yggdrasil, the world-tree whose roots reach through all planes. Cowardice is the most horrid crime a worshipper can commit, and many of these gods deny their clerics the power to heal battle wounds. Fate, kept by the three Norns, is absolute and beyond even the gods’ reach.
The Afterlife
In death, Odin chooses half of the most valiant of the fallen, and his Valkyries bear them to Valhalla to feast, battle, and ready themselves for Ragnarök; the other half are led to Fólkvangr, Freya’s field. Those who die of disease or in shame go to Hel, the realm of the goddess of the same name.
Ragnarök
The Norse view of fate is bound up with Ragnarök, the twilight of the gods. Prophecy foretells it in detail: a three-year winter (Fimbulwinter), the crowing of magical roosters, human lands falling into chaos, and the giants Surtr and Thrym marching on the gods with Loki, Fenrir, and Jörmungandr - until many gods are slain and the world sinks burning beneath the sea.
Deities of the Pantheon
Organised into the Aesir (higher gods), the Vanir (lesser gods), and the Jötnar: Odin (the Allfather), Thor (thunder), Loki (mischief and fire), Frigga (the atmosphere), Freya (love), Frey (sunshine), Týr (war and law), Heimdall (guardian of the Bifrost), Hel (death), Balder (beauty), Bragi (poetry), Idun (spring), Sif (skill in battle), Ullr (the hunt), Aegir (the sea), and more.
