The Kazuko Mei, rendered Kazuko May in some accounts, is an old crime family of Verra. It descends from Mei, a corrupt logistics officer who established a criminal dynasty in a city with few competitors.

The family declined after the Senegarte Pass opened and Verra passed to council rule. Unable to manage new rivals, enemies, or government scrutiny, the Kazuko Mei were absorbed into the city’s nobility and retained a council seat. The authorities use that seat to justify watching and curbing them, leaving the once-powerful family scarcely able to commit crimes.

In an earlier generation, the family’s head trained his meek nephew Juen May to exploit his extraordinary perception as an assassin. After the family was overthrown, Juen left Verra and became a mercenary. Hanin May is a younger scion who now occupies the family’s place on Verra’s council.
